PDO Thread Lifts
What are PDO threads?
PDO threads are injected into the skin to lift, tighten and improve the overall structure of the face. The threads are made of a substance call Polydioxanone (PDO) which is used for surgical sutures. PDO stimulates the neocollagenesis process, resulting in more collagen being produced in the skin.
Patients MAY see a very subtle improvement immediately following treatment where the thread has lifted the skin, but the maximum effect will be seen 3-4 months post treatment as the formation of new collagen starts after 6 weeks. The skin is not only lifted but the texture is improved; it becomes firmer and tighter.
The following images are before and after shots of a recent client who had combination treatments of threads and juvederm voluma fillers
What is the treatment procedure?
After consulting with your practitioner they will determine the scope of the PDO treatment. This will be followed with the placement of needles into the subcutaneous tissue after the skin has been cleansed with chlorhexidine solution. Needles are placed at specific points on the face to get the most effective skin tightening. A very fine needle is used to insert the thread into either the skin itself or the muscle.
Depending on the area being treated, different lengths and thicknesses of thread may be used. Short, fine threads are used for smaller delicate areas, such as around the eyes, while thicker, longer threads can be injected into the lower face and jawline. Barbed threads or “cogs”, which are threads that are covered in tiny barb-like bristles, may also be used to give even more lift and to stimulate more collagenesis.
The threads break down naturally and are absorbed by the body after approximately six to eight months. The results of the treatment, however, can last for up to two years.
For deep PDO cog insertion prophylactic antibiotics will be given prior to and post treatment, as well antibiotic cream being applied to the site of insertion for additional precaution against infection.
Indications for treatment are:
- Facial Contouring
- Lines and Wrinkles
- Skin Rejuvenation
- Skin Tightening
- Volume Reduction
- Lip Contouring
- Neck : Double chin or relaxation of platysmal bands
Possible side effects and complications:
- in very rare cases there can be a protrusion or migration of thread
What should I do after treatment with PDO threads
Following treatment of PDO threads, you can leave the clinic and you may have some swelling or bruising. You must apply SPF30 + and avoid direct sunlight, & tanning for up to 10 days and should not apply makeup after the treatment for 12 hours and avoid exercise for 1 week. You may experience a “stinging” or “pulling” pain or discomfort which is normal and subsides.
