JULAINE, Sculptra, Profhilo or Polynucleotides: Which Treatment Is Right for You?

If you’ve been researching injectable treatments for ageing skin, you’ve probably come across a growing list of names. Treatments like JULÄINE™, Sculptra, Profhilo, polynucleotides, HarmonyCA and dermal fillers are all talked about in the same general space, which can make it feel like they’re all just variations of the same treatment.

But actually, they are quite different in many regards.

At Face Perfect Clinic here in the centre of Leeds, we prefer to focus on what you’d like to improve instead of which treatment is best. And to help you understand how each of these treatments impacts different concerns, we have assembled the post below. Interested in speaking with one of the team or scheduling your own consultation? Why Are These Treatments So Easy to Confuse?

When you read about injectable treatments, you’ll see a lot of similar words: collagen, hydration, regeneration, skin quality and rejuvenation. Therefore, it’s easy to assume they all do roughly the same thing.

But in reality, they really don’t.

Some treatments are mainly used to restore volume. Others are designed to improve hydration, stimulate collagen, or support skin quality and repair.

But, as with so many treatments, there can also be some overlap. A treatment might improve skin quality and stimulate collagen, or add structure while also encouraging a longer-term collagen response.

That’s why the product name on its own doesn’t tell you very much about whether it’s right for you.

It can be much more useful to think about what has actually changed in your skin or face, because that determines which type of treatment is most relevant.

For example, you may have:

  • volume loss, where the deeper tissues of the face have reduced or changed;
  • collagen loss, where the skin has less of the structural protein that helps keep it firm;
  • dehydration, where the skin holds less water and can look dull or crepey;
  • changes in elasticity, meaning the skin doesn’t spring back as well as it once did;
  • or a combination of several of these at the same time.

Different treatments are useful for different parts of that picture.

What Actually Changes in the Face as We Age?

Facial ageing is more complicated than simply “losing collagen”.

Several things can happen at once.

Collagen production declines

Collagen is one of the main proteins that gives skin strength and support. As we age, we make less of it and the skin can gradually become thinner, less firm and more prone to folds.

Facial fat changes

The small compartments of fat that give the face shape and support can shrink, move or redistribute over time. That can change the cheeks, temples, jawline and the way folds (nasolabial folds) sit around the mouth.

Bone structure changes too

The bones of the face also remodel as we age. In simple terms, some of the deeper support beneath the soft tissue reduces over time.

Skin can become less hydrated and elastic

Hyaluronic acid, collagen and elastin all help skin look plump, hydrated and resilient. As those change, skin can look drier, thinner or less able to bounce back.

Repeated movement creates established lines

Lines that initially only appear when you smile, frown or squint can gradually become visible even when your face is at rest.

That’s why different patients who both say, “My face looks older”, can need completely different treatment plans.

What Is JULÄINE™?

JULÄINE™ is a collagen-stimulating injectable made from poly-L-lactic acid, usually shortened to PLLA.

PLLA is a biodegradable material, which means the body gradually breaks it down over time. In aesthetic treatment, it’s used because it can stimulate fibroblasts, the cells in the skin that make collagen.

JULÄINE™ contains tiny PLLA particles called microspheres. Microspheres are simply very small, rounded particles. Once they’re placed within the treated tissue, they help trigger the collagen response we’re looking for.

The treatment is currently intended for the correction of nasolabial folds, the lines that run from the sides of the nose towards the corners of the mouth.

The result develops over time as your skin makes more collagen in the treated area.

JULÄINE™ may be worth considering if:

  • your nose-to-mouth lines have become more noticeable;
  • reduced collagen support seems to be part of the problem;
  • you’d prefer a gradual improvement rather than an immediate volumising effect;
  • you want to improve support without dramatically changing your facial proportions.

JULÄINE™ vs Sculptra

This is probably the most obvious comparison because both treatments use PLLA.

Sculptra has been used in aesthetic medicine for much longer, while JULÄINE™ is a newer PLLA-based product.

Both are designed to stimulate collagen over time, but they’re different products with different formulations, particle characteristics and treatment protocols.

A formulation is simply the way a product is made and what it contains. The treatment protocol is how the product is prepared, injected and repeated over time.

Direct head-to-head research between JULÄINE™ and Sculptra is still limited, so we wouldn’t claim that one is universally better than the other.

Face Perfect doesn’t currently offer Sculptra.

If you’ve been looking into Sculptra because you’re interested in collagen stimulation, we can still help you work out whether JULÄINE™ or another treatment we offer makes sense for the change you’re trying to address.

JULÄINE™ vs Profhilo

JULÄINE™ and Profhilo are often mentioned in the same conversation because both are injectable treatments used for ageing skin, but they work very differently.

JULÄINE™

JULÄINE™ uses PLLA to stimulate new collagen and improve support in the treated tissue over time.

Profhilo

Profhilo is made from stabilised hyaluronic acid.

Hyaluronic acid is a substance that naturally attracts and holds water in the skin. “Stabilised” simply means the product has been processed so it lasts longer in the tissue than naturally occurring hyaluronic acid would.

Profhilo is mainly used to improve hydration, elasticity and overall skin quality.

So if your skin feels dehydrated, crepey or less elastic, Profhilo may be more relevant.

If the concern is more about reduced collagen support and deeper structural change, JULÄINE™ may make more sense.

Some patients may benefit from both within a broader treatment plan because they address different aspects of skin ageing.

JULÄINE™ vs Polynucleotides

Polynucleotides are also described as regenerative treatments, but they have a different role.

Polynucleotides are long chains made from nucleotides, which are the basic building blocks of DNA.

In aesthetic medicine, they’re used with the aim of improving skin quality, hydration, texture and the way the tissue repairs itself.

They’re often particularly useful for:

  • fine or crepey skin;
  • delicate under-eye skin;
  • texture;
  • hydration;
  • overall skin quality.

The evidence for polynucleotides in aesthetics is promising, although it’s still a developing area and there’s less high-quality research than there is for some older treatments.

JULÄINE™ has a more structural collagen-stimulation role and is currently intended for nasolabial-fold correction.

In practical terms, JULÄINE™ has a stronger focus on collagen stimulation and structural support, while polynucleotides are generally chosen when skin quality, texture, hydration or delicate areas are the main concern.

That’s simplified, but it’s a useful way to understand why the two treatments aren’t interchangeable.

Where Does HarmonyCA Fit?

HarmonyCA combines some of the immediate structural effect of a dermal filler with longer-term collagen stimulation.

It contains two materials:

  • hyaluronic acid, which gives more immediate volume and support;
  • calcium hydroxyapatite, often shortened to CaHA, which can also stimulate collagen over time.

Calcium hydroxyapatite is a mineral-based material used in some injectable treatments because it can provide structure and encourage a collagen response.

HarmonyCA may be useful where you need:

  • more structural support;
  • some immediate improvement;
  • help with contouring;
  • collagen stimulation as part of the same treatment.

Where Do Traditional Dermal Fillers Fit?

Dermal fillers are still extremely useful because genuine facial volume loss is a real part of ageing.

Most facial fillers are made from hyaluronic acid and are used to restore or add volume.

They can help with things such as:

  • cheek volume;
  • temple hollowing;
  • chin or jawline structure;
  • selected folds;
  • facial proportions.

Because the product itself creates much of the effect, results are usually visible straight away.

That makes filler very different from JULÄINE™, where the visible change develops as your own collagen response builds.

Which Treatment Is Best for Sagging Skin?

“Sagging skin” can describe several different changes.

For one person, reduced collagen may be an important part of the problem. For another, the change may be driven more by volume loss, skin laxity or a combination of several factors.

Where reduced collagen support is contributing, a collagen-stimulating treatment may be worth discussing.

If the face has lost significant volume or structure, dermal filler or a treatment such as HarmonyCA may be more appropriate.

If the main issue is skin quality, hydration or mild superficial laxity, Profhilo, polynucleotides or an energy-based treatment may be more relevant.

More advanced laxity may require a different approach altogether, because injectable treatments can only achieve a certain degree of improvement.

Which Treatment Is Best for Fine Lines?

Fine lines can develop for different reasons, so the treatment depends on what’s causing them.

Lines linked to dehydration or reduced skin quality may respond to treatments such as Profhilo, polynucleotides or skin boosters.

If they’re caused mainly by repeated facial movement, anti-wrinkle injections may make more sense.

Superficial lines related to texture or sun damage may also benefit from treatments such as chemical peels, resurfacing or other skin treatments.

Deeper folds associated with reduced volume or structural support usually need a different approach.

Which Treatment Is Best for Nasolabial Folds?

Nasolabial folds are the lines that run from the sides of the nose towards the corners of the mouth.

They can become deeper because of several things, including:

  • collagen loss;
  • changes in cheek volume;
  • reduced tissue support;
  • skin laxity;
  • your natural facial anatomy.

JULÄINE™ is specifically intended for nasolabial-fold correction using PLLA collagen stimulation.

Dermal filler may be more appropriate where the fold is being driven by volume loss or reduced support higher in the mid-face.

Sometimes treating the support around the fold makes more sense than simply injecting directly into the line.

Which Treatment Is Best for Volume Loss?

If you have true facial volume loss, treatments designed to restore volume will usually be more relevant than treatments aimed mainly at skin quality.

This is where dermal fillers and treatments such as HarmonyCA may have a stronger role.

Volume loss affects the fullness and shape of the face, while collagen loss affects the strength and support of the skin. They can occur independently or at the same time, which is why a face that looks less supported doesn’t automatically need filler.

Can These Treatments Be Combined?

Yes, they can be, provided there’s a clear reason for each one.

For example, someone might need filler to restore structural support and then have a separate treatment to improve skin quality or collagen.

That doesn’t mean combining more treatments automatically gives a better result.

A good plan should explain what each treatment is there to do, why it’s being used and how the timing fits together.

So How Do You Know Which Treatment You Need?

The appearance of a concern doesn’t always tell us what is causing it.

A deeper nose-to-mouth line could be influenced by collagen loss, changes in cheek support or both. Skin that feels loose may be related to collagen, hydration, volume loss or true laxity.

That’s why choosing a treatment usually starts with understanding the underlying change rather than choosing a product you’ve seen online.

Why Face Perfect Doesn’t Ask You to Choose the Product First

It’s very common to arrive at an aesthetics clinic having already decided that you need filler, Profhilo, Sculptra or whatever treatment you’ve been researching online.

But the same visible concern can come from different underlying changes.

Two people with deep nose-to-mouth lines might need completely different approaches.

At Face Perfect Clinic, we look at your skin quality, collagen support, facial volume, structure, movement, previous treatment and the kind of result you’re hoping to achieve.

From there, we can explain which options make sense and why. That might include JULÄINE™, another treatment we offer, a combination planned over time, or in some cases no treatment at all.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is JULÄINE™ the same as Sculptra?

No. Both use PLLA and both are designed to stimulate collagen, but they’re different products with different formulations and treatment protocols.

Face Perfect doesn’t currently offer Sculptra.

Is JULÄINE™ better than Sculptra?

There isn’t enough direct comparative research to say that one is universally better.

The more useful question is whether PLLA collagen stimulation is appropriate for the concern you want to treat.

Is JULÄINE™ better than Profhilo?

JULÄINE™ is mainly focused on collagen stimulation and tissue support, while Profhilo is mainly used to improve hydration, elasticity and skin quality.

Which is more appropriate depends on what you’re trying to improve.

Is JULÄINE™ better than polynucleotides?

JULÄINE™ has a stronger focus on collagen stimulation and tissue support, while polynucleotides are generally used to improve skin quality and support regenerative processes.

The most appropriate option depends on your concern and the area being treated.

Is JULÄINE™ a skin booster?

Not in the usual sense.

Skin boosters are typically hyaluronic-acid-based treatments used mainly to improve hydration and skin quality.

JULÄINE™ is a collagen-stimulating PLLA treatment.

Is JULÄINE™ a filler?

JULÄINE™ is an injectable implant, but it behaves differently from a conventional hyaluronic acid filler.

Its main effect comes from stimulating collagen over time rather than creating an immediate volumising effect.

Can I have JULÄINE™ and Profhilo?

Potentially, yes.

They work differently and can sometimes be used within the same overall plan, but the timing and suitability should be decided by your practitioner.

Can I have JULÄINE™ and dermal filler?

Potentially.

If you have both collagen loss and genuine volume loss, the treatments may have different roles. They should be planned together rather than simply added on top of each other.

What’s the best injectable for natural-looking results?

Natural-looking results depend on choosing the right treatment, using an appropriate amount and having a practitioner who understands facial anatomy and proportion.

The brand matters less than whether the treatment actually fits the problem.

I’ve heard of Sculptra but not JULÄINE™. Why?

Sculptra has been used in aesthetic medicine for much longer.

JULÄINE™ is a newer PLLA-based collagen stimulator and only entered the UK market more recently.
